Got any good remedies for getting rid of glue ear? I just went through a 10-day run of Avelox for a sinus/ ear infection and I feel better, but my ear's making big cracking/ popping noises and is partially muffled most of the time. I've got Afrin, Flonase, Sudafed, and Claritin at my disposal, ear cleaning kits, a sinus rinse bottle, nasal saline, and the student health clinic at my uni, if needed. Anything you could suggest would rock.
Tough problem. I presume we're talking about fluid behind the ear drum (someone would need to take a look to differentiate that from, say, a wax impaction, or drainage in the ear canal from a ruptured ear drum). I've never been too impressed by antihistamines, antibiotics, or decongestants for this condition. Nasal steroids (like Flonase) may help, but I often wonder how many of these get better purely by the passage of time.
Worst case scenario -- if it seems to take forever to clear up -- you would need to see an ENT for a myringotomy. That's a minor procedure wherein we make a small cut in the ear drum to drain out the fluid. It's not as horrible as it sounds, but don't try this at home.
My usual approach is to treat the underlying condition (as your doc did with the antibiotic Avelox) and wait it out. Good luck.
As I get older various environmental allergies seem to be getting worse. I could deal with this if it weren't for the fact that within a day of the first symptoms, I get ulcers (I think this is the term) in my nostrils. Very uncomfortable.
My physician has tried me on various standard allergy meds, which address most of the symptoms but not the scabbing/ulcers in my nose.
Any thoughts on how to at least alleviate this symptom?
I came across your web-page while reaserching the web for info regarding heart pulsing sound in ears. For a few months now I have been hearing my heart beat in my right ear, and I do not know why? It also feels as if someone has a hold on my throat and I experience discomfort. When I press under my jaw with 2 fingers as if I was taking my pulse the sound goes away. It has become very annoying and makes it hard for me to concentrate on my daily tasks.I asked my sister whom is a Nurse an she thinks it is due to anxiety and/or stress. She states when stressed the muscles in your troat tend to swell so I have been taking a muscle relaxer but it helps temporarly only. with your experience what is your hypothesis? It can be helpfull so when I go see my physician.
Re: nasal ulcers and allergies. The first condition may represent nasal impetigo (a staphylococcal infection), which is usually treated incorrectly by all but ENT docs. Sorry, folks, but that has been my experience. Any chronic ulcer raises the possibility of other more serious conditions, however, so I urge you to have an ENT doc examine that nose of yours. As for nasal allergies, there are a few excellent over the counter meds and several excellent prescription meds for this. Once again, an ENT doc would help guide you both in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.
Regarding pulsatile tinnitus: once again, this can be due to a variety of things, but stress and muscle tension don't appear very high on MY mental list. The fact you are able to "shut this off" by pressing on your neck suggests the possibility of jugular venous hum, but other vascular problems (like carotid bruit due to a narrowed carotid artery) can do this, too -- and that's a more serious problem. So, YES, this is something you need to bring to your doctor's attention as soon as possible. In the meantime, do a bit of web searching on "pulsatile tinnitus" to learn more about the possible diagnoses.
Does the "pulse in your ear" sound like "whoosh, whoosh, whoosh" and is it predominantly in the evening?
That's what mine does.
Another occasional mystery sound, that I've gotten for 6 months or so - you know that "sparkly" sound that signifies magical activity via pixie dust, fairy godmother wands etc, onstage? Though unfortunately in my case it seems to just be associated with a nose sensation, not with magic.
Whoosh and sparklies are intermittent, and independent of each other.
Thanks BTW Dr. H. for doing this. (And you are very attractive with those huge dark eyes)
I have an embarrassing problem. I constantly have "clouds in the sky" (white boogers). I have had this problem for a few years now. Any suggestions to help me from being labeled the booger lady?
I have had symptoms of mild to moderate Meniere's syndrome for over a year. An MRI ruled out a tumor. Other than that I have had trouble finding an ENT willing to take aggressive action. What is the typical course of diagnostic tests that should be done for these symptoms? My symptoms have been non-stop for 14 months now.
I had a few too many beers last night and today I have discovered black boogers... Second-hand smoke is def not the cause as my city is smoke free indoors... Could these black boogers be a sign of something serious and if they are what types of diseases customarily have these symptoms?

Regarding the whoosh whoosh, or any pulsatile tinnitus for that matter:
this is a good resource.
I don't have a clue about the magical sparkly noise, though!
